value of protecting substrates during
fabrication, assembly and shipment. The tough
General Chemical's Peelable coating clear film

a maskant against paint overspray.
The protective film can remain in
place for many months and is simply stripped away

Preservation
System:

Hello Sirs. I am
part of the Portuguese Air Force C-130
Fleet Management Team and currently we are
looking for preservation solutions for
long term storage of some of our aircraft.
We do not have enough hangars available,
so we will have the aircraft parked in the
outside, in a very wet environment.
Therefore, our major concern is corrosion.
We would like to know if you have any
solutions available suitable to those
conditions, and if those solutions follow
the MIL-PRF-6799L? Could you please
provide us some technical information
about your products? Is it required any
technical training to apply the coating?
We would also like to have from you an
unofficial quotation for the required
material and eventual specific tools
required, considering a rough estimation
area of the aircraft of 1000 m2.
MetalProtect
5201 is a water based peelable coating
that cures upon water evaporation to a
water impermeable glossy white film. This
coating is promoted to stop oxidation of
metals in humid condition. The cured films
are fairly good UV light reflectors also.
Application is by airless spray to a
minimum thickness of 12 mils wet. About 6
mils dry. The coating is formulated for
sag resistance of 24 mils wet. Almost
anybody can be trained to spray with
airless sprayer within one hour.
General Chemical Corp.'s line of chemical
milling maskants provides both water or solvent based
and UV Curable Masking Resins which are used
to allow aircraft manufacturers to chemical
mill small amount of metal from larger parts
to achieve weight savings. Maskants
protect the metal in areas not exposed to
the harsh chemical milling solutions.
They are designed for complete protection
from undercutting and are easily removed
after the chemical milling operation is
complete. Maskant is designed
primarily in the aerospace industry as this
process is uniquely suited to reducing
weight while maintaining strength on
aluminum parts.

Clay Modeling

sufficient pot pressure
(0.3 ATM - 5lbs/sq in)
to obtain proper fluid
delivery is recommended.
Airless spray can also
be used such as Graco No
205-904 with a 163-168
insert and a 28:1 ratio
pump. Use water only for
cleaning spray
equipment. Drying can be
accelerated by
circulation of warm air
or infra red lamps.
Special
Instructions:
When spraying over
freshly lacquered or
re-enameled surfaces,
allow 24 for lacquer to
dry and allow full
enamel cure before
applying peelable
coatings. Be sure to
apply full film
thickness of 100 microns
(0.004"). On equipment
to be stored for many
months exposed to rain,
sun and snow, it is
recommended that a 200
micron (0.008") film of
Strippable coating be
applied in two coats,
drying one hour between
coats. This is a water
based compound and
should be protected from
freezing. Recommended
storage temperature is
10oC-32oC.
Try to avoid 'feather
edges' or areas where it
is applied thinly. In
order to achieve a
defined edge it may help
to apply masking tape,
roller up to and over
the tape and remove tape
while Our Peelable
coatings Peelable
coating is still wet.
Repair:
If the Our Peelable
coating film rips or
tears, the flap may be
lifted and resealed by
applying a fresh wet
coat to the underside
and resealing.
Alternatively, cut away
flap and re-apply fresh
coating, it will bond to
itself.
External Weather
Resistance:
Long-term exposure to
sunlight will cause
premature deterioration
and brittleness of the
film. Exposure to water
after the film is dried
will soften the film but
it will recover once it
dries. Avoid traffic
over the wet or while
the film is wet. If
components are to be
stored externally for
several weeks we
recommend the
application of acrylic
topcoat which will
protect for 12 months
and more.
Drying Time:
It is critical that Our
Peelable coating film is
allowed to cure dry.
Drying time will vary
according to humidity,
temperature and weather
condition. The
evaporation of water
will be speeded by air
movement and warmth
supplied by natural and
mechanical means.
Adhesion:
Our Peelable coatings is
a temporary protective
Peelable coating and
adhesion is low.
Process:
Our Peelable coatings
once completely dry are
resistant to water and
solvent and acts as a
mask against sprayed
emulsion paints,
lacquers, oil or grease
and water.
Removal:
The dry Our Peelable
coatings strippable
coating film can be
easily removed either by
hand stripping or other
means. Our Peelable
coatings are
thermoplastic. Do not
try to remove in
freezing conditions. Our
Peelable coatings
becomes brittle in
freezing condition.
Clean Up:
Our Peelable coating is
a water-based product
and you can clean spray
equipment and brushes
with water. Do this
immediately before
peelable coating starts
to dry.
Coverage:
One liter will cover
approximately 4 square
meters at a dry film
thickness of 100
microns. You can also
use following chart to
calculate in mil
thickness and gallon
coverage.
