  Chemical Milling: General Chemical Corp.'s line of uv curable chemical milling maskants which are used for surface protection  to allow aircraft manufacturers, orthopedics Implants and other medical devices, surgical instruments, Turbine milling and other metal components  to chemical mill small amount of metal from larger parts to achieve weight savings or for other requirements..  
   UV curable masking resins have been engineered to enhance chemical resistance for reliable protection from strong acids and alkalis used in dissolving metal substrates during chemical milling.

They are designed for complete protection from undercutting and are easily removed after the chemical milling operation is complete.  Maskant is designed for the aerospace industry as this process is uniquely suited to reducing weight while maintaining strength on aluminum parts. General Chemical Corp. supply the aviation industry with UV PeelMask  resins  which are available in burn-off, peelable, and water soluble grades. The resins are easily removed and leave the surface residue free for CHEMICAL MILLING process and other  manufacturing . The tough peelable coating resists the attack of aggressive chemicals such  as acids & alkalies. It provides a clean edge to exposed metal areas for chemical erosion.  

UV_PeelMask cured coating can be trimmed to provide defined edge boundaries of components while still providing excellent protection with no leakage.

It is formulated to withstand the typical 200F+ Nitric Acid (HNO3) and Hydrofluoric Acid (HF) solutions used for the chemical milling of titanium components. It is formulated to withstand typical Sodium Hydroxide (NaOH) and Potassium Hydroxide (KOH) solutions used for the chemical milling of aluminum components.

Chemical Milling Process:
Immersion chemical milling/blanking is a chemical process that dissolves material from unmasked (unprotected) areas of metallic parts immersed in a tank of heated and agitated chemical reagents. The term "blanking" refers to small, thin work pieces, and "milling" indicates relatively large work pieces.

  Our Peelable coatings are  used for long term preservation  for the external storage of  airplane parts and equipment saving the use of internal storage space and also when they are  loaded on deck, protected from the corrosive elements during the long sea voyage .

Similar applications apply to any components that may be exposed to the elements for long periods of time that would be affected by U.V. degradation, acid rain or corrosion. The General Chemical Preservation System Peelable maskants are non toxic, non flammable and the water borne skin tight film will not damage plastic or painted surfaces.

When spraying over freshly lacquered or re-enameled surfaces, allow 24 for lacquer to dry and allow full enamel cure before applying peelable coatings. Be sure to apply full film thickness of 100 microns (0.004"). On equipment to be stored for many months exposed to rain, sun and snow, it is recommended that a 200 micron (0.008") film of Strippable coating be applied in two coats, drying one hour between coats. This is a water based compound and should be protected from freezing. Recommended storage temperature is 10oC-32oC.

Try to avoid 'feather edges' or areas where it is applied thinly. In order to achieve a defined edge it may help to apply masking tape, roller up to and over the tape and remove tape while Our Peelable coatings Peelable coating is still wet.

If the Our Peelable coating film rips or tears, the flap may be lifted and resealed by applying a fresh wet coat to the underside and resealing. Alternatively, cut away flap and re-apply fresh coating, it will bond to itself.

Long-term exposure to sunlight will cause premature deterioration and brittleness of the film. Exposure to water   after the film is dried will soften the film but it will recover once it dries. Avoid traffic over the wet or while the film is wet. If components are to be stored externally for several weeks we recommend the application of acrylic topcoat which will protect for 12 months and more.
